R v B - Arson with intent
Ines Diab of ULA Solicitors represented B on a charge of arson with intent and later with manslaughter.
B was arrested for committing arson by putting a bed mattress on fire in a hotel room. B was in a dispute with a client who failed to pay the full agreed amount in return for sex before leaving her in the room. B was enraged and caused fire in the room. As a result, a senior employee of the hotel collapsed with a heart attack while trying to put out the fire and later died in hospital. As a result, B was charged with manslaughter.
The evidence was overwhelming but due to careful preparation, Ines was able to secure a reduced sentence of 6 years.
